Tracing Your Ancestors Through Genealogy Tips and Tricks
John Leonard Berg, Coordinator of Public Services, Karrmann Library, UW-Platteville

Genealogical research has expanded beyond the scope of my particular ancestor to our shared immigrant standing in a new and evolving world. Discover not only a “how-to” on grafting a few additional branches onto the traditional family tree, but also discover the rich ethnic and historical context of our pioneer heritage. This presentation will summarize years of genealogical research on a German immigrant family who settled in New Ulm, Minnesota. A “show & tell” format will be frequently employed, so come prepared to share your own unique research stories! The presentation will wrap up with ideas for practical and unconventional strategies and approaches.

Private Soldiers: A Year in Iraq with Wisconsin's 2-127th
Staff Sargeant Joseph Streeter

In April 2005, the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 2-127th Infantry Battalion received word of their mobilization. The 620 soldiers would serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom on a mission that would take them into the most dangerous regions of Iraq, withstanding hundreds of attacks, see dozens wounded and lose three members killed in action. Get an inside look at the war when battalion members as well as authors and photographers of the new book Private Soldiers (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2007) show photos and discuss their experiences in Iraq and in putting together their stories for publication. This fall, a traveling exhibit will be going around to libraries throughout the state!
