Created by FamilySearch - the online site for the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

This collection contains the digital images of the index/abstract of 500,000 early New Hampshire birth records.

The records consist of index cards that give the town and date of the event and often much more information. With the town and date, the original records can usually be located. Normally there is only one index card per child, but occasionally there is a corrected card before or after the original card.

Hanscom, Constance Franklin Richardson. Ancestors and descendants of James Garcelon and Deliverance Annis : from Guernsey and Gloucester to Maine in the 18th Century.
This genealogy is about the descendants of Sea Captain James Garcelon who was born 4 April 1739 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey. His parents were Rev. Pierre Garcelon and Jeanne Bedat. He married Deliverance Annis, daughter of Isaac Annis and Experience Haraden, 29 February 1760 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. They had seven children. James died 18 November 1813 in Lewiston, Maine. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived mainly in France, Channel Islands, Massachusetts and Maine.

This index also includes the full-text digital copies of genealogical journals. These are fully indexed. I did a search for anything written about County Cavan, Ireland and quickly found this citation:

The Genealogy Center of the Allen County Library (Ft. Wyane, IN) has received a $10 million gift - to be given as $1 million payments each year over 10 years from the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation.

This session will be a look at Confederate records, both microfilmed and original, at the National Archives. Records created by the Union Army may help locate information on your Southern soldier as well as male and female civilians.

New York Genealogical & Biographical Society entrusts entire library to NY Public Library

The venerable New York Genealogical & Biographical Society sold its building (2007) and has now given its entire library collection to the New York Public Library (NYPL).

The New York Times reported this morning that even though the NYG&B had sold their building for $24 Million that they would not undertake the effort to relocate and maintain the library but instead has given the 75,000 volumes, 30,000 manuscripts and 22,000 reels of microfilm to the NY Public Library. The NYG&B was founded on 27 February 1869.

In the mid 1960s I would train down to New York City to use both libraries. It made quite an impact to be in the NYG&B Library - with it's impressive reading room and open stack collection - to walk the marbled halls of the NYPL, lined with paintings and be able to research my family history in both locations.

The NYPL's genealogy collection - more formally called: The Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy has long been known for its strong collection of research materials gathered for over a century - from the founding of the NYPL in 1848.

When I first began using the NYPL in the 1960s it was administered by Gerald D. McDonald who served from 1945-1969 and then by Gunther Pohl (1969-1985) and John Miller (1985-1987). The Division is currently under the capable leadership of Ruth Carr long serving Chief of that Division.

Library of Congress & National Archives Team-up for World Digital Library

The National Archives and the Library of Congress announced today that they have begun loading digital copies of their materials on a new site called the World Digital Library.

Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein and Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced today that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has become a founding partner in the World Digital Library (WDL). NARA will contribute digital versions of important documents from its collections to the WDL, which will be launched for the international public in early 2009.

These documents include Civil War photographs, naturalization and immigration records of famous Americans, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, and photographs by Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange and Lewis Hine. Examples of the images that NARA is contributing to the World Digital Library are now available online.

Example of a naturalization document - Declaration of Intent of Maria von Trapp, 01/21/1944 - that was put online in the WDL collectiton by NARA. NARA ARC Identifier 596198.

The WDL will include representative examples from these document categories - not the complete backfiles of these documents.

Today is the anniversary of the surrender at Yorktown in 1781 when General Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington, ending the war.

Here is an oration given on the 10oth anniversary of the victory along with other histories of the battle, the men that fought and the details of the conflict.

You especially want to read this scare item by General Cornwallis that was published in London in 1783.

Call for Nominations for the Genealogical Publishing Company Award, 2008.

This award is given as a career achievement award to a person who has made ongoing contributions to the genealogy and local history field over many years and who has been active in the ALA History Section.

The nominations will be evaluated for exceptional accomplishment in such fields as bibliography, book reviewing, indexing, professional association leadership, programs, and training.

Current membership in ALA, and the RUSA Division's History Section is required.

The award is sponsored by Genealogical Publishing Co. and was established in 1992.
It consists of $1,500 cash, with a citation.
It is open to a librarian, library, or publisher that meets the criteria.

News - Scholarship Targets Indiana Librarians & Genealogy

The Indiana Genealogical Society (IGS) is now accepting applications for its Library Staff Educational Scholarship. The scholarship is for staff of Indiana libraries and is intended to increase the staff's genealogical knowledge, enabling them to better serve their patrons.

The scholarship includes:
--A $500 credit to help pay the costs for the recipient to attend any conference, seminar or class that is related to genealogy.
--A one-time complimentary registration to the IGS annual conference for the recipient.
--A complimentary 1 year membership in IGS for the recipient.
--A $100 gift certificate for the sponsoring library, to be used towards the purchase of any IGS publications.

The scholarship is open to employees of libraries located in Indiana that allow public access to their collections. Library staff that are new to the field of genealogy are encouraged to apply. Applications must be postmarked by December 31, 2007 to be considered. The winner will be notified by mail and recognized at the IGS annual conference in Evansville on April 5, 2008.

Books of the Day

One of the keys for librarians is to connect their patrons with the books they really need.
I like to say that "You can't use a book if you don't know it exists". A good bibliography is an invaluable tool getting at just the right material that you need for your research. Over the years I have written and published dozens of detailed bibliographies - and early on I became a life member of the Association for the Bibliography of History.

Today's Books of the Day are just that - bibliographies, working tools that you can use and rely on, classic works that you should know and be familiar with.

News Flash: Ancestry Bought by Spectrum Equity Investors

TechCrunch is reporting that Spectrum Equity Investors has bought a "majority interest" in Ancestry's parent company: The Generations Network and is "almost certainly preparing for an IPO or other larger liquidity event".

It reports that they paid $300 Million and that Ancestry has annual earnings of $150 Million.

News: Family History Library & Georgia Archives - GA Death Records go Online

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH—FamilySearch and the Georgia Archives announced today that Georgia’s death index from 1919 to 1927 can be accessed for free online. The online index is linked to digital images of the original death certificates. This free database will open doors to additional information for family historians and genealogists with Georgia ties. The index and images can be searched and viewed at www.GeorgiaArchives.org (Virtual Vault link) or labs.familysearch.org.

The names of Georgia’s deceased from 1919 to 1927 are now very much alive, searchable, and viewable online—and for free. The online index to some 275,000 Georgia deaths is the result of a cooperative effort between FamilySearch Record Services, the Georgia Archives, and the Georgia State Office of Vital Records and Statistics. FamilySearch digitized the records, and volunteers from both FamilySearch and the Archives used FamilySearch indexing technology to create a searchable online index from the digital images of the original historic documents.

“These death records are obviously a gold mine for genealogists and historians. Certificates include age, county of death, parents names, occupation, gender, race and cause of death; these documents open all kinds of possibilities to researchers,” said Georgia Archives director, David Carmicheal. The deceased person’s name, birth and death dates, sex, spouse and parents’ names and location of death were extracted from each certificate for the searchable database.

The linked image of the original death certificate can reveal additional interesting facts and clues for the family historian like the names and birth places of the deceased person’s parents, place and date of the decedent’s birth, marital status, occupation, permanent residence, and place and date of burial and cause of death.

Before making the certificates viewable online, Carmicheal said patrons had to order copies through the mail for a fee or visit the state archive’s office in person. The new online database will make it quicker and easier for patrons to get the information they are seeking. “It is always exciting for family historians when they can freely search a vital record index online like the Georgia death records. The link to the original death certificate is an added bonus—it saves you time, money, and provides rich genealogy data,” said Paul Nauta, manager of public affairs for FamilySearch.

The users just type in an ancestor’s name that died in Georgia between 1919 and 1927. They will see a brief summary of information from the ancestor’s death certificate with a link to also view the original image. Additional state indexes are currently in production.

Books of the Day - George Washington's Ancestry

Books of the Day

This past weekend two things happened, one was the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the White House in 1792 and the other was that my daughter returned from a weeklong school trip to DC where they visited the White House and other sites in our nation's capitol.

So in that spirit I selected these two books on George Washington's ancestry as today's Books of the Day. They were written by two of the nation's preeminent genealogists: Joseph Lemuel Chester (1821-1882) and Henry FitzGilbert Waters (1833-1913).

The first is an essay by Joseph Lemuel Chester that examines the ancestry of Washington and includes quotes from Washington's correspondence on his family's traditions about their origins. Chester was inducted into the NGS Hall of Fame in 1995.

The next book is a sequel to Chester's work that expanded this discussion of Washington's ancestry. It was written by Henry FitzGilbert Waters (1833-1913). Like Chester, Waters was also elected into the NGS Hall of Fame.

Since Columbus Day is celebrated twice this week - on Monday the 8th and on the traditional day Friday the 12th I am posting a few titles of interest.

The first is Robert Franz Foerster's The Italian Emigration of Our Times published by Harvard. This thorough book should be read by all genealogists interested in Italian family history. It describes the emigration from Italy not only to the US but to Switzerland, Argentina etc., and in turn the second migrations to other countries and those returning to Italy. Foerster discusses the migration from Italy from the earliest times but his focus is the pace of migration from each of the regions of Italy from 1876 to 1909. He gives charts and tables throughout the text. Note the useful table on page 529 showing the numbers of migrants from 1876-1886, 1887-1900, 1901-1909.

The second is a scarce item about Italian migration to Argentina and the impact the Italians had on the agricultural economy and practices there.

The last title is a very scarce and unusual manual for Italian immigrants. Written in Italian and published in Sao Paulo, Brazil, it briefed them on the law and on what they could expect in Brazil. Sao Paulo encouraged migrants to build their economy.
